La Bouche du Roy
Mangroves, blue carbon sink and source of life
By Earth Funders
Trees are the source of life. The planting of a mangrove area in the Bouche du Roy nature reserve will greatly contribute to carbon sequestration, biodiversity preservation, protection of local communities from flooding and the preservation of their fisheries resources and livelihoods.
In Benin, since 1980, one third of the mangroves have been destroyed. The funds raised will be used to restore mangroves and amplify three mangrove-related benefits in the region :
1/ Carbon sequestration
Mangroves are among the most powerful carbon sinks in the biosphere. They can sequester 4 times more carbon than any forest.
Carbon knows no boundaries. By planting mangroves, we are helping to reduce CO2 emissions not only locally but also globally.
2/ Biodiversity
Mangroves are home to many species and are also known as the nurseries of the sea. The roots of these unique trees, the only ones to survive in salt water, are places of refuge and protection for very young fish and sea turtles.
3/ Communities
Beyond the benefits to the natural environment, mangroves also greatly benefit local communities by providing them with food sources (fish, crabs) and income through fishing, agriculture and handicrafts.
The protection of mangroves therefore goes hand in hand with the sustainable development for the profit of local communities.
'I am impressed by what these projects set in motion. They are carried by the people of Benin and have a global and lasting impact.’ - Jill Peeters
Allocation of the funds:
We are calling on you to plant 50 hectares of mangroves in Southern Benin, reducing carbon emissions, preserving biodiversity and improving the livelihoods of local communities
Help us reach our ultimate target and have a look at what we can accomplish together, with maximum funding.
The impact of the 'La Bouche du Roy' campaign goes way beyond climate impact and contributes to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
About the project partners:
This mangrove project is implemented on the field by the local organization Eco-Benin. CO2logic intervenes in the allocation of the funding thanks to the Earth Funders Fund and also supports the project to achieve financial autonomy through the VCS certification (Verified Carbon Standard). This guarantees the sustainability of the activities through time and will allow Eco-Bénin to restore additional areas of mangroves and insure the protection of the natural reserve La Bouche du Roy.
'I used to pay for most of my school books with the income from fishing in the mangrove areas, but today thousands of young people no longer have this opportunity because of the degradation of these ecosystems. We can give new hope to the inhabitants by accelerating the restoration of the mangrove.'-
Gautier Amoussou
